SHEFFIELD SHIELD. WIN FOR VICTORIA. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 31. In the Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales Victoria in their second innings scored 79 for two wickets (Lee, not out 43). Victoria won by 8 wickets. New South Wales have not won a single match in the present Sheffield Shield series, which is now drawing to a close.

HAWKE CUP. RETAINED BY WAIKATO. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAMILTON, January 31. Mainly because of a fine but restrained 64 by Aitken, and a useful supporting 13 by Everest when the team was in a critical position, Waikato staved off the third challenge of the season for the Hawke Cup by beating Hawke’s Bay by 9 runs on the first innings.

Waikato had nine wickets down for 145 runs, after which Aitken and Everest were associated in a great partnership, which gave the home team victory. Everest gave a chance when the score was 156 and one run short of the objective, but the fieldsman dropped a hard catch. Aitken scored the winning hit with a brilliant 4, and after that played havoc with the attack till caught off another big hit.

Play was not begun till after lunch, when the bowlers were assisted by a strong cross wind and a rapidly-drying wicket.
