WATER SUPPLY

THE PROBLEM IN CARTERTON BOROUGH. POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS DISCUSSED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Proposals to augment the present water supply were discussed at some length by the Carterton Borough Council at its meeting last night. It was stated that 2| miles of new main would have to be laid, connecting up with the reservoir, to provide an ample supply for the present population, with a margin.

Councillor G. McKenzie said the council should seriously face up to the water question. The present inadequate supply was no credit to the town. If a poll of ratepayers were taken on the question, he said, he thought they would carry it. Other councillors were of a similar opinion. There was no shortage of water in the rivers, they observed. It was only that a full bore was not going into the present system and furthermore there were far too many leakages in the present line of pipes laid round the hillside.

Councillor Udy thought that another reservoir should be made soon after the water left the intake and this could be used as a feed to the present one. The new line of 21 miles of pipes should go direct to the point of the hill behind Blake’s property and thereby be a separate feed from the river. The Mayor (Councillor Taverner): “There is no doubt the business has got to be faced sooner or later.” He added that he thought the sooner it was tackled the better. The council possessed a report made by Mr Climie for a stand-by service at a cost of something like £9.000. This report could be produced by the Clerk and it probably would give a lead to the council in the question now under discussion. It was agreed that the Clerk should bring forward this report and also should ascertain the cost of 12 inch cast iron pipes and that of lined steel pipes.
