PROVINCIAL MEMORIAL

HALL AND BATHING PAVILION AT PETONE. DETAILS OF WAIRARAPA • ALLOCATION. The design submitted by Mr H. L. Massey for the proposed Memorial Hall and Bathing Pavilion to be erected on the foreshore at Petone as a provincial centennial memorial to commemorate the founding of Wellington Province by organised settlement has been approved by the Provincial Centennial Committee. The central dominating feature is a hall with a large memorial window symbolic of the meeting of Maori and Pakeha. Beneath the window is the prow of a ship and a map of New Zealand is worked in the paved floor of the hall, while standing in the centre is a globe showing the course sailed by the ships coming from England. The dressing accommodation extends on either side of the hall and between the building and the beach is a promenade. The building is to be of concrete.

Satisfaction was expressed by all present at the last meeting of the committee at the harmonious blending of the memorial features with the utilitarian features and at the dignified nature of the design. It is estimated that the cost will be £lO,OOO. In view of the fact tthat the bathing pavilion will be used more by residents of the Hutt Valley than by other persons in the province the proposed allocation of cost per head of population has been proportionately heavy in the Hutt Valley and Wellington areas and light in the other parts of the province. The basis of contribution is as follows:—Wellington City, Wellington Harbour Board and Wellington Chamber of Commerce, £3500; Hutt Valley, £3000; outside areas £lOOO. The Wairarapa allocation is as follows:—Akitio County, £8; Carterton Borough, £l3; Castlepoint County, £4; Eketahuna County, £l4; Eketahuna Borough, £5; Masterton Borough and Chamber of Commerce, £6O; Masterton County, £22; Mauriceville County, £5; Pahiatua County, £l9; Pahiatua Borough, £11; Featherston County, £26; Featherston Borough. £7; Greytown Borough, £8; Martinborough Borough, £7; Wairarapa South County, £2O. The Provincial Committee asks each zone to undertake to find its quota either by public subscriptions, by local body payments or by a combination of both. A meeting of the Wairarapa District Committete will be called at an early date to consider the matter. Mr Massey has been instructed to prepare working drawings and specifications so that tenders may be called at an early date. The Provincial Sub-committee which reported on the project consisted of the Mayoi- of Petone, Mr G. London; the deputy-Mayor of Wellington, MiMartin Luckie; the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan; the Mayor of Palmerston North, Mr A. E. Mansford, and the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr J. W. Andrews. This committee agreed to the architectural competition, which’

had been promoted by the Petone Borough Council, being completed by the council and the matter then handed over to the Provincial Centennial Committee, which should reimburse he council for any expenses incurred.
