CLASH IN DATES

INTER-HOUSE ASSOCIATION.

SAME DAY AS COLLEGE FUNCTION.

So many public gatherings have been arranged in Masterton during the next two months, that clashes of fixtures appear to be unavoidable. One such conflict has arisen between Wairarapa College and the nearly-formed Inter-House Association. On Saturday. March 4, the College has arranged a Gala Day in a special effort to raise funds, and the Inter-House Association has planned a monster sports gathering and girls’ drill display on the Park.

At last night’s meeting of the executive of the Inter-House Association, following a discussion between the chairman, Mr G. Daubney, and the College principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, an effort was made to find a suitable date for the Inter-House competitions and so avoid clashing with the College function. March 4 was, however, the only day on which the Park could be used for a sports meeting and the Athletic Association had already waived a prior claim for that date, while the Borough Council had, in consequence, made the necessary allocation. There were many other practical difficulties in the way of postponing the sports till the end of March or the beginning of April and most members of the executive were definitely against a night display. It was, therefore, decided to adhere to the original date, March 4, but in order to assist the College as much as possible, the girls’ drill competition which will be the biggest “draw” on the programme was scheduled for an hour earlier. People who were interested in both functions would then be able to leave the Park for the College gala. It was reported that the following teams had already been entered for the girls’ drill competition:—Hansell’s Laboratories, Macduff's, W.F.C.A., Leecroft Chambers, Hugo and Shearer, Cody’s Cash Drapery, State Kitchenette and C. Smith’s. There were prospects of a number of other teams entering and a practice will be arranged next week for team leaders and instructors under Mr C. Rodgers, of the Defence Department.

The association will be represented in the “Keep Fit Week” procession by Hansell Laboratories team.

A programme for the athletic sports section was presented and will be finalised this week for publication in the “Times-Age.”

The Municipal Hall has been engaged for the association’s dance on the Saturday night of the competition when the prizes will be presented. Discussing the clash in dates with the College, Mr G. Daubney, chairman of the Inter-House Association, told a “Times-Age” representative this morning that he had, since last night’s meeting, discussed with most members of his committee a proposal for offering the College a demonstration by the winning girls’ team after the competition was over. Provided transport could be arranged, if the College would accept the offer, the association would send the winning girls’ team to give a display and so act as an added attraction at the College grounds. The association proposed making this offer as an indication of its desire to assist the College in every way possible.
