WAIRARAPA COMPETITION MATCHES MARTINBOROUGH DEFEATED BY MASTERTON. GAWITH SHIELD MATCH. In an A grade Gawith Shield match played at Martinborough on Saturday, the Masterton Tennis Club defeated Martinborough by 14 matches, 16 sets and 227 games to 10 matches, 10 sets and 210 games. Men’s singles: P. Hawksworth beat G. McLeod, 6/1, 5/6, 6/3; McPherson beat P. Ward, 6/2, 6/3; Faulknor beat Evans, 6/1, 4/6, 6/4; Miller beat Grant, 6/1, 6/4; A. Ward lost to C. Ward, 5/6, 6/5, 4/6; J. Groves lost to Duffy, 4/6, 6/4* 1/6.

B GRADE. Masterton defaulted a B grade match to Memorial, Lansdowne forfeited to Masterton Park and Greytown defaulted to Mount Bruce. C GRADE. Carrington Park forfeited to Memorial. Maslerton Park beat Kuripuni in a C grade match played at Park, by 22 matches to 2.

TINUi v. MEMORIAL PARK. During the weekend a most enjoyable match was played at Masterton between the Tinui and Memorial Tennis Clubs. Despite wind interference the games were very closely contested. Memorial Park won the match by 11 sets, 165 games, to 5 sets, 135 games. The following players took part:— Memorial Park: Messrs Leete, Marsack, Kennedy, Hurley, Long, Challis Duff and D. Costello, Mesdames Connolly and Hurley, and Misses Watson, Brown, Johnstone, Holtham, McCord and O. Eddy.

Tinui: Messrs N. Groves, Miles, J. Groves, Carmine, Holder, Langdon, Maunsell and Bartholomew; Mesdames Maunsell, Speedy and Holder, Misses Caverhill, B. Laing, J. Jones, and J. Laing.

Afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee of the Memorial Park Club. VISIT FROM NAPIER TEAM. WIN FOR ST PATRICK’S CLUB. Fifteen members of St Patrick’s Tennis Club, Napier, visited Masterton during the week-end to play a match against St. Patrick’s Club, Masterton. The home team proved the winners by 21 games to 15. The visitors were entertained at a dance on Saturday night and returned home yesterday evening.
