EARTHQUAKE’S TOLL
THIRTY THOUSAND DEAD IN CHILE VICTIMS STILL BURIED UNDER DEBRIS. EVACUATION OF DEVASTATED CITIES ORDERED. (Independent Cable Service.) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) SANTIAGO. January 29. Newspapers estimate the earthquake dead to be at least thirty thousand and the injured sixty thousand. Most of the bodies are still buried under tons of debris, constituting a grave menace to health. Polluted water and a food shortage are causing widespread illness and suffering. Torrential rains have hampered the rescue work and added to the misery of the refugees. The authorities have ordered the evacuation of the devastated cities. The ruins are being dynamited and fired to prevent epidemics. The earthquake struck suddenly without the usual tremors,
