WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP

In one of the most exciting finishes seen for many a day, Institute Old Boys maintained their unbeaten record for the season and their place at the top of the Wellington Cricket Association's ladder by defeating Wellington College Old Boys on Kelburn Park by 15 runs on the first innings on Saturday.

A spirited?stand for the eighth wicket by J. Boddy and M. Henderson, which added 72 runs, saved the day for Institute. The Institute total reached 299, in reply to Old Boys' total of 284. C. S. Dempster, with an injured thumb, scored 28 for Institute, mostly by onehanded strokes.

Midland climbed to second place by defeating University by an innings and 44 runs. Midland totalled 405, E. W. Tindill scoring an even century, R. O'Neill hitting freely for 90, and W. Hepburn notching 64. University, who had scored 231 in their first innings, collapsed for 130 in their second knock.

Kilbirnie advanced themselves from bottom place to fourth position by outplaying Karori to the tune of an innings and 9 runs. Kilbirnie had scored 243 on the opening day, and dismissed Karori on Saturday for 77 and 157. With 147 runs on for the loss of only three wickets, Wellington had a glorious opportunity of heading Hutt's total of 252, but good bowling by E. McLeod, who took five for 42. saw Wellington dismissed for 242, Hutt winning by 10 runs on the first innings. Hutt declared in their second innings, when five wickets had fallen for 171, Wellington’s second knock realised 123 for four wickets.

Victoria in their first innings have lost two wickets for 176 runs (Gregory not out 65, Hasset not out 64).
