AMATEUR ATHLETICS

INTERPROVINCIAL CONTEST. > PULLAR WINS THREE MILES EVENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Canterbury-Wellington interprovincial athletics meeting held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday was highly successful, though the Canterbury team was not at full strength and included only one woman competition, Miss L. Boanas, who won both the sprints. In points, Canterbury were successful, 169. Canterbury competitors joined in the Kitto Shield parade, which opened the programme, the Wellington club being awarded 95 points, and Kiwi 78. The Canterbury sprinter, C. Gordon, had no trouble in winning the 100 yards, in which the Masterton and former Wellington man, A. Welply, ran well. G. Quinn, the national champion, who has been out with a pulled muscle, was second in this event and the furlong, which C. Robinson (Wellington) won in splendid style. In the mile Blewett CC) had to be content with a second to Bourgeois (W), Blewett was unplaced in the half-mile, which produced a great finish between F. Taylor and T. McCashin, who chased the winner to the tape. The promising Wairarapa quarter-miler, Evans, won his event in fast time from C. Robinson and Eastwood, producing a powerful 50-yard burst to finish.

In the three miles Dickie (C) made the mistake of attempting to stay with such a finished performer as W. A. C. Pullar in the early stages, and retired with two laps to go. Pullar, who has had litle racing over this distance, returned 14.49 3-5 and ran with confidence. His first mile was a fast one, 4.39, the second and third being much slower. Mackay and Scrymgcour hung on well to fill second and third places. MASTERTON TEAM. TO COMPETE AT PETONE.
