TWO FIRE CALLS
SHED IN BANNISTER STREET DAMAGED. DANGER OF GRASS CATCHING ALIGHT. The Masterton Fire Brigade received two calls to fires this morning. The first one, at 7.13 o’clock, was to a grass fire on a vacant section in the lower portion oh Cornwall Street. The motor pump was brought into operation, and the fire was soon under control. The second call was received by street alarm at 8.51 to a detached shed and conveniences on the property of Mrs Ellen Hill, 52 Bannister Street. The fire was soon extinguished, but not before the shed was severely damaged. It is stated that some nearby residents helped to check the spread of the flames before the arrival of the engine.
The Fire Brigade Superintendent, Mr T. B. Clark, wishes to draw the attention of the public to the danger of grass fires during the present dry period, and seeks its co-operation in reducing the risk to a minimum by the taking of all possible precautions. Mr Clark requests the owners of sections to have all long grass cut and burnt. He points out that it is an offence to burn standing grass. This has to be cut first and a permit is then necessary before it is burnt. He stresses the fact that the public cannot be too careful, and that by preventing the occurrence of grass fires it would greatly assist the brigade in dealing with a property fire, should this occur.
P. Eastwood, 5 Perry Street, is Chief Agent for General Accident and Fire Assurance Corporation, Ltd. (Inc. in Scotland).*
