The Rev D. N. Mac Diarmid, director of missions of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, will return by ' the Mariposa, arriving at Auckland on February 6. Mr and Mrs Mac Diarmid have been abroad for several months, visiting the missions of the Church in Canton and in Punjab, and attending the world missionary conference held near Madras in December, Sir Hubert Ostler, who is to resume his judicial duties on the Supreme Court Bench after a year’s leave of absence because of ill-health, will preside over the quarter session of the Supreme Court which will open in Palmerston North next Wednesday. Three Masterton boys are leaving on Monday to go into training at the Hobsonville Air Base of the Royal N.Z. Air Force as aircraftsmen. They arc Messrs K. Osborne, Gordon Street; C. Staniforth, High Street, and D. R. Miller. Pownall Street. The funeral of the late Mr Francis Edwin Truscott took place yesterday afternoon, there being a large attendance of mourners. The Rev E. J. Rich conducted a service at St Matthew’s Church and also officiated at the graver side. Wreaths were sent, besides many others, by the Druids’ Lodge and by fellow "workmen on the Knox Sunday School building. Messrs H. A. R. Dunderdale and J. McCalmont (representing the Druids’ Lodge) and A. J. Hume, P. Dixon, L. Taylforth and G. Dagg acted as pallbearers. Mr David Barnes, former Labour member for Waitaki, who was defeated by the National candidate, Mr D. C. Kidd, at the general election in October last, has been appointed a director of the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand. The State Advances Corporation Act provides that the board of management shall consist of two joint managing directors, appointed for a term not exceeding seven years, one or more other directors to be appointed from time to time by the Governor-General in Council, to hold office during pleasure, and an ex-of-ficio director representing the Treasury, as approved by the Minister of Finance. The board at present consists of Messrs A. D. Park and I’. N. Smallwood, joint managing- directors; G. A. Lewin, director; and B. C. Ashwin. first assistant to the Treasury, who is director ex-officio.
