DEFENCE LEAGUE

FORMATION OF MASTERTON BRANCH. MEETING ON MONDAY NIGHT. A proposal to form a local branch of the New Zealand Defence League will be discussed at a public meeting called by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, for Monday night next at 8 p.m. in the Municipal Buildings. The president of the league, the Hon W. Perry, M.L.C., and the organiser, Mr Eric Reeves, will address the meeting. The league, which is strictly a nonparty political organisation, is alarmed at the gravity of the international situation, and the “deplorable state of’ the defence forces of New Zealand.” The league has decided that immediate action is necessary if the situation is to be met.

Briefly, the proposals of the league are as follow: —A minimum of three months’ recruit training by all youths on attaining the age of 18 years; thereafter continuity of training in the Territorials for a period of four years; the maintenance of a Territorial force of not less than 20,000 in three brigade groups (two in the North and one in the South Island); the league affirms the principle of equality of economic sacrifice in war-time.
