SITTING OF MAGISTRATE’S COURT. MOTORING AND OTHER CASES (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Magistrate’s: Court, held yesterday afternoon, was presided over by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. The following Cases were dealt with:— CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil cases: Gordon Hughan, Ltd. v. R. W. Mark, claim £3 ss, court costs Bs, solicitor’s fee 15s 6d; same v. J. Higgins, claim £2 4s, costs Bs, solicitor’s fee 15s 6d; Watson & Co. v. J. Loader, claim £1 3s sd, costs Bs. In a judgment summons case, Jas. Wilson v. A. V, Stevens, claim £8 5s 6d, there was no appearance of defendant, who was ordered to pay £7 5s 6d and solicitor’s fee 15s 6d forthwith, indefault 7 days in Wellington gaol. MOTOR CASES. Guy Jorion, charged with driving a motor vehicle on December 3, at Carterton, without due care and attention, was fined £5, costs 10s. W. C. Jimieson was charged with being the driver of a motor vehicle in High Street, Carterton, when in view of other traffic and when about to draw out from the kerb, he failed to signal his intention to move. He pleaded guilty and was fined 10s with 10s costs. The same defendant was charged with failing to carry a warrant of fitness as prescribed by the traffic regulations. He was convicted and fined 10s with 10s costs.
August Lipinski was charged that on December 8 he failed to stop and give way to another vehicle which was approaching an intersection, Phillip Street to High Street. The defendant failed to appear and was fined £2 with costs 10s. He was also charged with failing to carry a warrant of fitness and was fined £1 with costs 10s. Whenua Robert Hadfield, charged with driving a motor vehicle over the Ruamahanga Bridge on December 23 (a one-way bridge) without care and attention, pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined £3 with costs 10s, and was given a month in which to pay.
C. S. Nicolson, Traffic Inspector, proceeded against Josephine Corbitt for driving at a speed exceeding 30 miles per hour through Carterton borough on November 13 last. There was no appearance of defendant and she was fined £2 and costs 10s.
Inspector Nicolson proceeded against J. T. Bridges for driving on December 9 through the borough, of Carterton along the main highway and across the pedestrian crossing at a speed exceeding 35 miles per hour. Defendant was convicted and fined £2 and costs 10s. Geo. F. Ireland was charged by Inspector Nicolson that on December 16, at Carterton, he rode a motor cycle that was not equipped with a silencer which was effective and in good working order. Accused pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to pay costs 10s. LICENSING CASES. Albert George Graham McDonald was charged by the police that on December 3 he did aid and assist in the commission of an offence with A. E. Izzard, licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, to sell liquor after hours. There was no appearance of defendant and he was convicted and fined 10s and costs 10s. Robert Kane, Neil Gordon McDonald, Albert Franklin and J. R. Gardener were charged with similar offences and were each convicted and fined 10s with costs 10s. BOWLING. CARTERTON CLUB GAMES. The champion pairs and singles contests of the Carterton Bowling Club are now drawing to a close in view of the early approach of the championships to be decided under the jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre fixtures in February and March. Results are: —
Champion Singles.—Stent defeated Barber, 21/18.
Colts’ Singles.—Boyne defeated Newbould, 20/18.
Champion Pairs. —Boyne and Simmonds (s) defeated Smith and Tucker (s), 19/16; Harrington and R. Thompson (s) defeated Williams and Riggs (s), 18/11. The draw for the semi-finals is as follows: —
Singles.—G. Hart v. Stent; Robertson v. Sorenson.
Pairs. —Williams and Riggs (s) v. Boyne and Simmonds (s); Harrington and Thompson, a bye.
BOOTH CUP AND DUTHIE SHIELD. Carterton will be represented against Martinborough on Saturday next as under; — At Carterton. • — Kilmister, Harris, Barber, G. Hart (s); Beale, Williams, De Lacey, Sorensen (s). At Martinborough.—Smith, Robertson, Budd, Riggs (s); Harrington, Underhill, R. Thompson, Tucker (s). Shield. — At Carterton: Newbould, Thompson, W. Hart, Whyte (s). BOWLING CENTRE GAMES. The championship games in connection with the Centre will be decided on the undermentioned dates: —Champion singles, February 18 and 25; pairs March 4 and 11; rinks, March 18 and 25. ROSE MEMORIAL BADGES. A challenge was issued against the holders of the Post and Telegraph Rose Memorial Badges, Messrs. Hy. Simmonds and Geo. Riggs, of the Carter-
ton Post Office, by Messrs. J. B. Davis and Jas. Anderson, of the Featherston Post Office. After a very good game throughout, the badges were retained by Carterton by 28/11. PHYSICAL WELFARE. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the special committee set up under the Physical Welfare Act, a circular was received outlining the proposed programme for the Physical Fitness Week, which is to be held from February 18 to 26, inclusive. In Carterton sports gatherings are already scheduled for both Saturdays, and it i was considered that these would work in very well with the general campaign. The gatherings are the Ahiaruhe Sports Club meeting and an exhibition of baseball, both events taking place on the Showgrounds. In addition, the usual competitions of the Carterton Swimming Club will be held on the Thursday evening, and the club will no doubt be approached with a view to making that particular evening more of i carnival.
National activities recommended are special church services on the Sunday, with a special broadcast by the Go-vernor-General after the evening services, sports gatherings, school lectures, and a final demonstration and pageant of "Youth and Health,” in which active members of all sports bodies could participate.
