SALVAGE CHECK
WORK OF RAISING FREIGHTER AT PORT PHILLIP.
PETROL FOR PUMPING ENGINE CATCHES FIRE.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, January 25.
Hopes of raising the Union Company’s freighter Kakariki. which sank in the Port Phillip fairway two years ago after a collision, were postponed by a curious mishap today. The Kakariki, whose funnel and masts only are showing above the water, was ready for raising on Friday after six months of work underwater patching and pumping.
When petrol was being poured today into the pumping engine inside the ship, it caught fire and for an hour the funnel top spouted flames and smoke. There will be further delay now while the engine is removed from the funnel for repairs.
