BOROUGH WORK

REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. At last night’s meting of the Masterton Borough Council, the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported as follows:— Streets: The following tarring work was carried out during the month: Chapel Street, flanks from Renall Street to Crayne Street; Dixon Street, flanks from Herbert Street to Crayne Street, east side; Dixon Street flanks from Russell Street to Crayne Street, west side; Keaton Street, path from Church Street to Bannister Street west side; Archer Street, path from Church Street to Bannister Street, west side; Johnstone Street, path from Colombo Road to River Road, north side. The continued broken weather with so much heavy wind and rain is hampering tarring operations considerably. The kerbihg of The Terrace on the north side from Opaki Road to King Edward Street, has been completed and four new crossings installed. Cooper Street is being scarified and regraded preparatory to tar sealing operations. A start has been made With Short Street flerbing. The Waipoua River diversion is proceeding satisfactorily, the second suspension bridge tower being completed and 1 hope to have a portion of the channel opened up to turn the water through in the course of the next few days. Building permits: During the month four permits were issued, having an. estimated value of £6872, the fee: thereon amounting to £9 10s. For the corresponding month last year, six permits were issued, having an estimated value Of £1570 13s 6d. The twelve-monthly periods ending December 31, 1937 and 1938 are as follows: 1937, 118 permits valued at £50,950 6s, includes 22 dwellings; 1938, 99 permits valued at £49,223 11s, includes 17 dwellings. These figures are exclusive of Government housing construction.

BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Borough Inspector (Mr. T. A. Russell) reported as follows: —Notifiable infectious disease: Diphtheria: Two cases in the one household were notified. These were the first positive cases since August 11, 1938. Pulmonary tuberculosis: Two cases were reported during December and one to date this month. Milk supply: The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis. The T.B. testing of town supplying herds is being at present carried out. Several farms were inspected. Traffic: Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £567 Is 3d. The amount collected for the year ended December, 1938, was £2073 16s lOd. as compared with £1966 15s Id for the previous year. Thirty-eight applicants for drivers’ licences were examined, five failing to pass the test. To date this year 2253 drivers’ licences have been issued as compared with 2134 for the corresponding period of last year. The parking signs recently erected in Queen Street and Perry Street are having a good effect as motorists are now aware of the time limit in these streets. The closing of Queen Street to motor traffic on the late night al Christmas and New Year was given effect to, two vehicles only having_to be towed off the street, the owners being charged with the cost. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager reported: Gas manufactured and sold: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 3,765,000 cubic feet, being an increase of 49,000 cubic feet or 1.3 per cent, over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows an increase of 167,900 cubic feet, or 5.4 per cent.
