GREYTOWN
OBITUARY. MR. JAMES MAGUIRE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred in Wellington early this, morning of a former Greytown resdent who was closely associated with the progress of the district over a long period of years, Mr. James Maguire. He was born in Ireland 94 years ago. and came to New Zealand as a young man taking up his residence in Wellington where he was a prominent oarsman and firebrigadesman. He was married in Wellington and came to Greytown about 60 years ago. He organised the local fire brigade and was a noted bandsman. He played for many years for the Greytown Football Club and was a Wairarapa representative. A splendid cricketer, he organised the cricket club in Greytown and was an active member’ of the Greytown Bowling Club. He was a guest of honour at the recent jubilee of the Greytown Football Club. He took a keen interest in the friendly society movement and was a valued member of the Odd Fellows’ Lodge. He left Greytown eight years ago to reside in Picton and subsequently went to live in Wellington. Mrs Maguire died some years ago, and the following family is left: Messrs Albert (“Paddy”) Maguire, Masterton, a former noted Wellington and Wairarapa representative footballer, James Maguire (Sydney), and Mat Maguire (Greytown), Mesdames Percy Rogers (England), W. Nix, L. Rae, P. Roband, P. McNamara (Wellington) and Noho Toki (Sydney). The funeral will take place tomorrow morning, leaving the Greytown Catholic Church at 11 a.m. for the Greytown Cemetery. Personal. Mr H. T. Rees is laid aside with illness.
