BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. RISE IN PRICE OF COAL. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors Trevor Beetham, J. Ninnes, G. W. Morice, A. T. Jackson, H. E. Garnder, R. Russell, G. D. Wilson, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd and W. White. Councillor A. D. Low was granted leave of absence. An invitation was received from the Lansdowne school committee for the Mayor and councillors to attend the official opening of the new Lansdowne school on February 1. The invitation was accepted with thanks. Miss J. Fowler was granted permission to teaching swimming and lifesaving at the Dixon Street baths. The State Coal Depot advised that a further rise of Is a ton for coal would come into effect as from December 12. The Mayor said that with increases in price and in freight charges, the council was now paying 55s 6 a ton for coal, the highest it had ever paid.
The Masterton Interhouse Association was given permission, on the usual terms, to hold a gala day in the Park on March 4.
It was decided to purchase a children’s encyclopaedia for the Library at a cost of £ll ss. The cost is to be charged against the Alpass Bequest. A petition was received from ten residents asking that certain improvements be carried out in Roberts Road between Lett and Gordon streets. The petitioners are to be advised that their request will receive attention in due course. It was resolved, on the application of the Masterton Swimming Club, that all instructors and pupils be granted free admittance to the baths during the “Learn to Swim Week.”
