PRIVILEGE ABUSED
MASTERTON WATER SUPPLY. NEW HOSING RESTRICTIONS. New hosing restrictions are to come into force in Masterton as from tomorrow, according to a decision reached at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. In future hosing will only be allowed between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said he was not satisfied with the result of the existing water restrictions. Advertising restrictions on the use of garden hoses except between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. amounted to a plain invitation to residents to leave their hoses going for 14 hours a day. The wastage should be stopped. He moved that in future hosing be allowed only between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Cr W. Kemp agreed with the Mayor, and said that at times there was no water available in High Street and South Road.
Councillor Trevor Beetham said that the proposed new restrictions would impose undue hardships on residents who employ gardners. The restrictions would not be fair or reasonable. “It is the abuse and not the use of wafer that is the trouble,” remarked Councillor H. E. Gardner, who seconded the motion. The new restrictions, he said, should be rigidly enforced. The whole trouble was that Masterton had a water supply for 6000 people with 10,000 drawing off it. The Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, said there was sufficient water available provided, it was not wasted. After some discussion, an amendment that hosing be allowed only between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. was carried.
