CARTERTON

A SURPRISE PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Recently Mr Ben R. Rayner entertained a large party of. relatives and friends in honour of his birthday. So pleased were* they with the hospitality extended by Mr Rayner that it was decided by those present at the function to pay a surprise visit to Mr Rayner’s residence. This was carried out last Saturday evening when about 20 friends assembled at his residence. During the evening, games, etc. were participated in and at a suitable time Mr Gordon Hughan stated that the surprise visit was macle for the purpose of recognising in some tangible way Mr Rayner’s hospitality. He called upon Mrs C. Manley to make a small presentation to Mr Rayner. This she did in a very happy little speech. She said how pleased they all had been at the enjoyment he had provided for them on the occasion of his birthday party. Mrs Manley hoped, with the rest of the party, and those who were not able to be present, that Mr Rayner would still retain his good health and live to see many more such birthday parties. She then asked Mr Rayner to accept on behalf of all those who were present on the occasion of His birthday a beautiful travelling rug. Cheers were then given for Mr Rayner, followed by the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr Rayner thanked those present for their kindness, and for the handsome gift. The gathering was brought to a close at midnight by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Personal. Mr Raymond Phillpotts, accountant at the Bank of New South Wales, Gisborne, accompanied by his wife and family, are spending a holiday with Mr Philpotts’s parents in Carterton. Previous to coming to Carterton, they spent a fortnight in Auckland.
