TOP RANK LOOKS FIT
(By “
“The Cynic.”)
Top Rank boars a very fit appearance at present, and he looks ready to run well when required. The brush hurdle race at Riccarton next month will be his next. Looks Are No Bar. Tomcat, who earned three placings in as many starts over the Riccarton country at the Grand National meeting, has been in light but useful exercise for some time past, and he will be ready early in the jumping -season. Tomcat, being of such a heavy and “early” type, belies his looks when it comes to jumping, and can be likened more to his namesake as there is no doubting his agility, although such a cumbersome looking animal. Not Himself. Paper Slipper did not show any dash at all in the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham on Thursday, and, as he indicated by his track gallops before leaving Riccarton, he is suffering from temporary loss of form. A Close Call. The success of Haughty Winner on the first day was well' received in racing circles; but he had little to spare. A declaration of a dead-heat between him and Amigo would not have been surprising. Good Credentials. Defaulter’s yearling half-sister by Foxlight elicited fairly keen competition at Wednesday’s sale, and was bought by Mr W. J. Smith, of Sydney, who intends to race her before putting her to the stud. Mr H. D. Greenwood was an interested spectator only when the filly was put up. From Successful Dam. The Hunting Song colt purchased by Mr C. N. Draper, of Dunedin, on Wednesday, is a well-grown youngster, and at 250 guineas appeared to be good buying. His dam, Kinetic, is by Penway from Gladys Soult by Soult. She was never raced; but has produced five winners, including Adalene. an Auckland Railway Handicap winner. The colt will join F. D. Jones’s stable this week. Wellington Gold Cup. The Gold cup that accompanied the stake in this year’s Wellington Cup was known as the Gilmer Memorial Cup. It was presented to the club by Mrs F. E. Herbert and Mr Sam Gilmer, sister and brother of the late Dr H. A. H. Gilmer. Tiderace. Tideracc, sire of the My Own colt which topped the market at Trentham at 1450gns, was imported by Mr T. H. Lowry. He is by Fairway (Phalaris — Scapa Flow) from Panic (Hurry OnVolcanic). The. success of the Hurry On line, through Hunting Song, Pink Coat, Lord Warden and Defoe, in New Zealand, no doubt helped the market.
A Hawke’s Bay Winner. Dainty Dell, a winner' in Hawke’s Bay during the holidays, has possibilities in her pedigree. She is by Defoe from Bonnie Vale (Lackham —Dale Ogden). Dale Ogden is by Kilbroney from Ukraine (Dam of Sasanof), a sister to All Red and Munjeet.
Telegraph Handicap Records. Blazer, who won in 1902 with 10.4 claims the distinction of being the most highly-weighted winner of the Wellington Telegraph Handicap. The Dunedin sprinter had been successful in the two previous years with 9.12 and 9.8. The time record for the race (and for Trentham), is held by Silver Ring Imin 9Jsec.
No Racing. Pink Lad, who was raced three times as a two-year-old last season, has not been required to race this season. This seems a good plan because he has grown into a very big horse and it would have been retarding him had he been raced. Pink Lad is now trained at Riccarton by D. E. Cotton, but he is still owned by Mr T. J. Lister, of Timaru.
A Likely One. Moorsotis had been working in most satisfactory style leading up to the Trentham meeting, but F. D. Jones decided not to take the colt when Royal Chiefs trip had to be cancelled on account of a foot injury. The Myosotis colt has grown and furnished a good deal since he raced at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and he may show some form at Riccarton next month.
Improved. Montcssa looks an improved filly for her racing at Wingatui, and has settled down well as the result of her travelling and her two public appearances. C. Emerson has had an exasperating" run with his team lately, as two or three of them arc laid aside at present on account of lameness, but Montcssa should help to keep the ball rolling during the absence of Nightcalm. Miss Otis and company. Looks Good. West Wind, the Posterity—Lady Zephyr filly, has come on a good deal deal lately and now looks in the order which should see her racing with prominence in the autumn. D. J. O'Connor has the two-year-old looking very well. Winning Rival. Winning PJval is gradually getting over the trouble she experienced just before Christmas, and is much freer in action in the paddock. Cutts Bros, are unlucky in losing the services of
their best two-year-olds, Winning Rival and Great Swoop, at such an important part of the season. Resumed Work. The good performer Erndale and his half-brother, Phildale, have resumed work at Avondale after enjoying a rest. Erndale shines when the ground is soft and it may be the same with Phildale, who has done little racing, but has shown sufficient pace to indicate that he is well worth persevering with. Good Form. Although he had little to spare when he won at his last start, Bachelor King revealed good form and there should be more success ahead of him, as he is still handily placed in the weights. It is worth remembering where Bachelor King is concerned that he revels in soft going. A. Tinker has him in great heart at present. Golden Sheila. Following her third among the open sprinters on the third day at Ellerslie. Golden Sheila ran fourth at her next attempt when she contested the Nathans’ Memorial Handicap, one mile and a quarter. Doubt exists whether she is ever likely to recover her former brilliance, but her latest showings suggest that further success will not be beyond her. May Win Soon. Whirling did not do as well as expected in his races at the summer carnival at Ellerslie, but he was third on the final day to Bachelor King and Llangollen. An easing of the ground would probably assist Whirling, but his turn may not be far away. Useful Material. While R. S. Bagby is absent in Australia, his team at Ellerslie is under the control of K. Heaton, who won races last season with Sir Abb. Heaton has some useful material to handle and he will have a busy time at the meetings on the Auckland circuit in the next few months.
