The loyalist forces in Spain have striven not only to keep Spanish culture alive, but also have worked to improve the education of the soldiers and the populace. Militias of culture have been organised, book fairs have been initiated, and classes assembled to impress soldiers as well as civilians with the significance of Spanish civilisation. New editions of Zola, Dostoievski, Tolstoi, Andreyev, Gorki, Volny, and many others, including all the better known Spanish authors, have been published in increasing numbers within the last six months. An abundance of these books has been distributed free among soldiers and to the wounded in the hospitals. During the first day of a book fiesta in Barcelona, thousands of dollars worth of books were sold. Before long it was found that the demand exceeded the supply. As a result, publishing houses in all the leading Loyalist cities have been working overtime.
