HAWKE CUP

ELIMINATION MATCHES WANGANUI BEATS WAIRARAPA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI. January 21. Wanganui had a convincing win by nine wickets over Wairarapa in an elimination match for the Hawke Cup competition, played on Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui, yesterday and today. The wicket was good and conditions ideal, but the Wairarapa batsmen were never comfortable with the exception of R. Clarke, who batted safely for 77 not out. He went in first wicket down, and his steady performance prevented what might have been a complete collapse. N. Hoar was the only Wairarapa batsman to score runs freely and his 46 was a valuable contribution to a total of 197. Wanganui fielded well, and their varied bowling attack met with success.

Wanganui went, in with 109 runs to get, and for the loss of one wicket they scored 113 in good time. Details: —
