GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. January 20. Business in the Canterbury grain and produce markets is taking up again slowly, but it will be another two weeks before it reaches any considerable volume. Interest at present is confined mainly to wheat, oats and ryegrass. Wheat threshing has been held up by the heavy winds. Most of the threshing done has been in North Canterbury. The quality of the wheat is very good, but nothing definite can be said yet about yield. It is considered in some quarters that it will be on the light side, but it is too early to form any reliable opinion.
The oats s mple is excellent —good, hard, bright stuff and very dry. Gartons, of course, comprise the greater part of the offering at present, but merchants have received one or two samples of Algerians. Quotations for A Gartons are 2s 7d to 2s 8d and for B’s 2s 5d to 2s Gd. Algerians are quoted at up to 2s lOd.
The ryegrass season has begun very disappointingly, pool' germination being the trouble. Most of the samples have run out at between 20 and 50 per cent in the early threshed crops. Better results arc hoped for from the later crop. Nominal quotations lor perennial 'good germination) are 3s and for Italian. 2s 6d.
There is no new season's white clover yet. and the quotation for old season's remains at Is a lb. There is no interest in red clover.
The weather has been almost ideal for the potato crop, which is looking very well. The acreage planted is less than last season, but the reduction is not substantial. The markets are bare of good chaff.
