STEADY PROGRESS

NORTH ISLAND TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

RESULTS OF YESTERDAY'S PLAY.,

FAIRLY HIGH STANDARD SET.

Quiet but steady progress was made yesterday at the North Island tennis championships, which are being held at the Masterton Club’s courts in conjunction with the Wairarapa Association’s annual tournament. Play was interesting without being particularly good but there should be a decided improvement today when a number of the admittedly better class players will be seen in action.

K. Dyer (Wellington) one of the most dangerous players at the tourney, had a comparatively easy win over E. Evans and entered the third round of the championship singles. O. Bold, run-ner-up at Martinborough, started off on the right foot against R. McL, Ferkins, winner for the past three years, but once Ferkins settled down in earnest ho had the edge on Bold practically throughout. The tennis was of a high standard and there were some sparkling rallies. Ferkins was accuracy personified, particularly with his ground strokes.

Misses Castle (Wellington) and M. Glenny both impressed with their performances in the ladies' championship singles. Results after going to press yesterday were as follow: —

TODAY’S MATCHES

PLAY IN PLEASANT WEATHER. MISS STURROCK DEFEATS MISS BETTS. The North Island tennis championships were continued at the Masterton Club's courts today. The weather was again fine and the wind fortunately dropped. There was an upset in the ladies' championship singles when Miss L. Sturrock (Wellington) defeated Miss J. Betts, Masterton, in three sets. Miss Betts failed to find touch and in face of the consistent accuracy of Miss Sturrock, who retrieved relentlessly, she fell into serious errors. Miss Castle played fine tennis to defeat Miss Forrester and she. Miss Sturrock and Miss Glenny have all entered the third round.

M. L. Lampe (Wanganui) and J. N. Lowry (Hawke's'Bay) both won their first round games in the men’s championship singles. Painter took the first set 6/3 off E. M. Hodder and the Masterton player was down 1/5 in the second set. He then rallied, however, and evened at 5 all. Painter had to call up all his resources to clinch the match at 7/5. Hawksworth maintained his fine Martinborough form in his second round match will) R. Sharpe, a Hawke’s .Bay representative. It was a keen, interesting game in which Hawksworth’s superior speed and clever placements won the day.

G. McLeod took Max Ferkins to three hard-fought sets in the men's singles. McLeod was all over his opponent in the first set. but the volatile anu mercurial Ferkins "dug his toes in" and gradually secured the upper hand in the second set. McLeod tired in the last sot which Ferkins won with the loss of one game. G. A.tPearce beat J. Payton in straight sets. Bright play was witnessed in a championship doubles match in which Painter and Dyer, a dangerous combination, beat Webster and Webster.

Andrew, a young Masterton player, fully extended J. N. Lowry in a second round singles match. Andrew stroked cleanly and strongly and it was only Lowry’s experience and steadiness that enabled him to take the second set 7/5.
