TROPICAL CYCLONE
MUCH DAMAGE IN SAMOA DELUGE OF RAIN CAUSES FLOODS. TWENTY-EIGHT INCHES IN TWO DAYS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. APIA, January 19. The effects of a tropical cyclone centred between Fiji and Tonga were first felt in Apia on Saturday afternoon, with stormy weather and high seas increasing .by 9 a.m. to a moderate gale, which continued all night and reached gale force on Sunday with a maximum velocity in gusts of 65 miles an hour. With the gale came a terrific rainfall. Twelve inches fell on Sunday and 16 inches on Monday, 10 inches falling between 9 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. Much damage resulted from flooding,'a hyd-ro-electric plant, a water-works, and the telephone service being put out of commission.
At Vaisagano the river rose five feet above normal and washed down trees, Samoan houses, and live stock. All the villages on the beach were under water. Several bridges were washed out and others damaged beyond repair. Damage to roads was enormous from washouts and landslides, and is estimated at £40,000. All plantations, including bananas, reported damage, and private property suffered severely. No' lives are reported to have been lost.
