MAURICEVILLE COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL SPREAD OF NOXIOUS WEEDS. INSPECTOR TO BE REQUESTED TO TAKE ACTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Maurice.ville County Council was held on Tuesday last. Councillor E. W. Cheetham was in the chair, there being also present Councillors R. Judd, D. Bennett and A. Forsberg. Leave of absence/ was granted to Councillors C. Welch and A. Gray. The Treasurer reported debit balance of £1577 4s Id. Accounts amounting to £247 3s lid were passed for payment. A letter from Mr R. Breach intimating that some repairs were required on the Putara Road, was considered and the matter was referred to the Overseer for attention.
Inspector Milne requested, on behalf of the Transport Department, permission to use the County yard and sheds for the periodical inspection of lorries. It was decided to accede to his request, subject to arrangements being made with the County Overseer from time to time.
Councillor Bennett referred to the continued spread of blackberry and other noxious weeds in this County, and pointed out that nothing had been done for a very long time to arrest this menace on farm lands. The Clerk was directed to request urgent action by the Inspector to enforce the cutting or elimination of these weeds.
The Secretary of the Provincial Centennial Committee requested certain information regarding the incorporation of the County and the names of the various chairmen and the periods of their appointments, etc. The Clerk was directed to supply the information required. The Clerk reported that the special order to raise the loan of £3OO for the construction of McKenzie’s Bridge had been duly advertised and submitted the debenture for sealing as authorised by the special order. The District Engineer wrote suggesting that the question of proposed sealing of part of Main Highway No 87, Dreyers Rock road, should be discussed with the Public Works Engineer at Masterton so that application might be made for a subsidy to be provided on the next highway jestimates. The Main Highways Board advised the rates of subsidy which would be granted for the purpose of improving visibility at corners for the purpose of increasing the safety of the roads. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded proposals in regard to the organisation of sports in connection with Physical Fitness week and the appointment of committees for the purpose. The Clerk was directed to reply that the Council would co-operate to the fullest extent with the Masterton Borough and the various sports organisations with the object of making the Physical Week operation a complete success.
A special meeting was also held for the purpose of deciding what working day should be the Statutory half holilay for the year 1939-40 and a resolution was carried appointing Friday, being the same weekly half holiday held in the past year.
