FIRE IN CARTERTON
BRIGADE DOES GOOD WORK
WASHHOUSE BADLY BURNT.
A washhouse was badly gutted am. two houses had narrow escapes frorr destruction as the result of a fire ii. Pembroke Street. Carterton, this morn ing. The outbreak occurred about 10.4. a.m. in a washhouse attached to r. house owned and occupied by Salvation Army officers. Summoned by the siren, the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene, bu. even so the washhouse was then a mass of flames' and the fire had takerhold of part of the house. A breeze wi> blowing at the time, but aided by t good pressure of water, the brigade die splendid work and soon had the fire under control.
For a time the adjoining residence ol Mr V. Gustofsen was menaced. The washhouse was badly damaged and the eastern side of the house will need rebuilding. The house and the washhouse are insured at Salvation Army headquarters.
