SPLINTER IN HAND OR FOOT
HOW TO GET RID OF IT. A splinter of wood or a thorn in the hand or foot should be treated before the affected part shows signs of festering. If the end of the splinter is visible, use a pair of forceps to extract it, if it is lying under the skin, sterilise a needle by dipping it into boiling water and lysol, and then dislodge the splinter if possible in one piece.
If the splinter or thorn lies deeply under the nail cut out a V-shaped piece of the nail first and then apply hot fomentations before attempting to remove it.
Afterwards apply iodine or acriflavine solution—this precaution applies after the removal of any foreign body from the skin but especially after the removal of rose thorns, which are apt to set up a form of blood-poisoning.
