MANY MISFORTUNES
ELLSWORTH EXPEDITION
CHIEF 01-f-iCER IN NkED OF MEDICAL AID.
SHIP DELAYED BY ICE.
(Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.)
(N.A.N.A. copyright message from Mr Lincoln Ellsworth.) MONTREAL, January 16.
Heavy pack ice is delaying the dash to Australia, for medical aid. A series of misfortunes followed the flight of January 11- A strong easterly wind smashed tip the bay of ice and drifting icebergs compelled us hastily Io retreat from the bay. Two days later, a section of a berg, on which three men were chipping ice for the fresh water tank's, broke, throwing them into the water. Chief Officer Liavaag was caught between two sections, his knee being badly crushed, but he succeeded in grasping an edge of the lie and holding on till he was reached. The setting of a broken kneecap is a hospital operation, so I decided to sock the nearest port immediately. We then ran into one of the lumpiest seas in my experience, the bridge being stove in and other damage done. Now we are held firm and without interference should reach port in three weeks' time, but it is impossible to say how long the ice may delay us.
