WORKING DOGS
PROTEST AGAINST EXTRA TAX.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Through the medium of your paper, I would like to protest against the unfairness of the extra dog tax levy, more so on behalf of the men who depend on their dogs for a living. It may not seem much—ls. per head — but consider the number of dogs that are in work and the extra expense that will be incurred by the farmer, shepherd and drover. In the position I hold, I require at least four dogs and that means 14s for tax against 10s. Why should we have to pay tax on our working dogs, as they are the means of obtaining employment, not to mention that they are a costly tool. The man on relief does not pay tax on the shovel he uses on useless work, nor does the builder on his hammer, yet a dog. not only a toiler, who can shame a lot of men of today, but also a faithful friend, must be taxed or be destroyed. I hope someone with more ability will take this matter up and bring it before the Farmers' Union, who may bo able to help us. Thanking you for your space.—l am, etc., A.H. Masterton. January J 6.
