INSTITUTE AT TOP OF LADDER

By beating Wellington by 62 runs on the first innings on the Basin Reserve on Saturday. Institute Old Boys displaced Wellington at the top of the senior cricket championship ladder. Resuming their first innings with 227 runs oh for the loss of four wickets. Institute were all out for 282. Wellington ran up 202 for nine wickets in their second innings, and then applied the closure. J. Ell, 88.

With 62 minutes left in which to get 141 runs to win, Institute did some fast scoring, but when six wickets had fallen for 107 runs, the Institute captain, A. McLean, elected to play for safety, and Institute had 119 on for the loss of six wickets when time was called. C. S. Dempster's absence from the Institute team robbed the match of a great deal of its interest.

Karori scored their first win of the season by beating University by 130 runs on the first innings.

A mild sensation was caused on the Hutt Recreation when S. Ward, the Kilbirnie captain, declared his first innings closed right away with 102 on for the loss of seven wickets in reply to Hutt’s first innings’ score of 142. The Hutt batsmen showed their gratitude by running up 208 for two wickets and then declaring. R. J. Kemp scored' 104. At the call of time Kilbirnie had scored 149 for four wickets. Hutt won by 40 runs on the first innings. Wellington College Old Boys gained a narrow victory over Midland by 14 run on the first innings. Midland scored 198, in reply to Old Boy’s 212. Old Boys, in their second innings hit up 290. |
