KEEN BIDDING

AT RIGID LIMITS WOOL SALE AT NAPIER PRICES ON PAR WITH WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, January 14. A clearance of fully 98 per cent of the total offering of 27,000 bales at prices id to Sd below those realised at the first sale in December, but fully on a par with the last Wellington sale, was made at the second Napier wool sale of the season today. The sale was marked by unusually keen competition from a full bench of buyers represntative of every buying country—keener buying had not been seen at a Napier sale for very many years —but the bidding was restricted to rigid limits which were rarely exceeded. Top price was 15jd, paid for a line of Lincoln wool sold on account of Arlington Station, Waipukurau; another line,, of Lincoln from Makaretu made lSgd.' Other noteworthy sales included 14), d for a line of A wool sold, on account of Ellis Brothers, Takapau; account Eliza Hales, EAA 12d, EC 12|d; account Oakbourne Station, EA 12{d; account Mr. J. M. Paton, EAA 12{d; account Mr M. Davidson, halfbred, 12d; account Mr A. H. Hope, B 13 ; }d; account Ellis Brothers, B 13d, C 13|d; Waikaraka, AH 12Jd; Rakaiatai, AE 13-Jd; Awapapa, AH lid. The offerings that exceeded lid, however, were limited in number, and the great bulk of the total offering made between 91d and lOld. Good quality fleece wool ranged from lOld to .lid, exceptional lines making .11 Jd; average top-making sorts made from 9Jd to lOld. The keenest demand was for good style crossbreds of 44’s quality and lots of this description attracted the strongest competition throughout ±e sale. Lambs’ wool met with a limited demand the better lines making from 10|d to Hid, and there were more passings of lambs’ wool than any other lines.

Brokers report that as at the December sale, binned wools were popular with buyers, and some of these lines met spirited competition. Some of the offerings of binned wools were as large as 45 bales. , The quality of the wool was on the average below that of the first Napier sale; nevertheless there were some excellent lots. Any falling off in quality was due solely to the unfavourable weather. Among the better lines were some from the Gisborne district, which were keenly sought by buyers at prices that were considered very satisfactory. The buying was well spread, with the Continent operating particularly strongly; Bradford was also prominent for all classes suitable to its needs and America, Japan and Canada purchased moderately.

The range of prices, compared with the Napier December sale, is as follows: —

A GOOD DEMAND EXPECTED AT LONDON SALES. WITH LITTLE OR NO CHANGE IN VALUES. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LONDON, January 14. A good demand with little or no change in values compared with November is expected at the London wool sales opening on January 17, for which the New Zealand offering is 45,700 bales. Bradford firms are expected to be useful buyers in view of the steady consumption of merinos since November. It is also expected that France will be a good buyer as the depreciated currency has improved wool exports to Scandinavia. Some circles are of the opinion that the London sales, coinciding with the arrival of crossbred from New Zealand may slightly ease prices, but others believe that the arrival combined with the offerings at the sales will not meet present requirements. It is anticipated that there will be little change in crossbred prices, specially for lower qualities.
