CARTERTON
OBITUARY. MRS HANNAH M.cPHEE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred al her residence. Belvedere, this morning of an old and respected person in the person of Mrs Hannah McPhee, widow of Mr Hugh McPhee in her 71st year. Born at Matihiwi in 1868 the late Mrs McPhee had seen much of the hardships of the early pioneering days, and could relate many stirring incidents of early times, when the Wairarapa from Masterton southwards was practically virgin bush, and coaches were the general means of travel. She well remembered when the railway line first came to Featherston and many instances of her early life among the pioneer settlers and friendly natives. She was a
daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Wm. Compton and had resided in the Belvedere district for the past 42 years, taking an active interest in every movement that was for the benefit of Carterton and the district. During the Great War and'the epidemic of 1918, she rendered very valuable service to those who were stricken with sickness. She was always interested in church matters and was, until illness
prevented her, a regular attendant at St. Andrew’s Church, Carterton. Seven years ago she met with a serious accident, falling and fracturing a hip from which she had been more or less an invalid and found it necessary to get about with the aid of a crutch. She was highly respected by a wide circle of friends and her death will be deeply regretted. Right up till the last she retained her faculties and died quietly at 7.35 o’clock this morning, with her family around her. The family consisted of four girls. They are Mrs T. M. King (Matron of the Carter Home, Carterton), Mrs Jessie Weir, of Christchurch, Mrs Maggie Buick, of Mount Bruce, Masterton, and Mrs Mary Nankivell, of Lower Hutt. She is also survived by a brother, Mr Peter Compton, of East Taratahi, and two sisters, Mrs Albert East and Mrs Henry Wilton, both resident at Pahiatua. There are 12 grandchildren. Mr Duncan McPhee, of Connolly’s Road, Carterton, is a stepson. The funeral will take place on Monday, leaving her late residence for the Clareville Cemetery.
Tennis Ranking Ladder.
At a meeting of the Carterton Tennis Club a letter was received from the President of the Masterton Tennis Club, Mr E. M. Hodder, concerning the establishment of a ranking ladder in the Wairarapa, and suggesting that the selection of representative teams should be announced a fortnight or three weeks before the game is to be played so that the selected players might have a chance- of playing together and obtain the necessary combination to win. It was decided to support the proposal. Mr M. W. Worsfold brought up the matter of the Carterton Club holding a Wairarapa championship meeting each year. The underlying idea was that all Wairarapa Clubs would send their best players, and cnampionship games only would be played. It was considered that there would be at the least twenty men and twenty ladies, and singles, doubles and combined matches would be contested. It was suggested that New Year, following on the Martinborough tournament, would be a suitable time, and a committee comprising of Messrs M. W. Worsfold, L. D. Keedwell. J. Steel. Pt. W. Roydhouse, Mrs L. D. Keedwell and Miss Smart was appointed to go into the question of ways and means. Personal.
