RIMUTAKA FIRE
SERIOUS DAMAGE TO CARGO.
SHIP DUE IN AUCKLAND TONIGHT.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 12.
Further details received in Auckland concerning the outbreak of fire in the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rimutaka in the South Pacific early this week reveal that a considerable amount of damage was caused to cargo in the hold which was ablaze.
The upper ’tween deck of No 3 hold, the deck in which the fire started, is very seriously affected. Goods in the lower ’tween deck and main hold are also damaged, probably partly through fire and also through water and chemicals.
The Rimutaka will arrive at Auckland from London tomorrow night on her first voyage in the service. The liner will anchor in the stream on arrival and will berth at Queen’s Whari on Saturday morning, when her 285 passengers will disembark. Cabled advice was received from London by the Auckland office of the New Zealand Shipping Company that a general average of 10 per cent has been declared on cargo arriving by the Rimutaka consequent on the damage sustained by the fire in No 3 hold. The liner carries a very heavy consignment of cargo from London for discharge at Auckland and Wellington.
