MYSTERY SOLVED

MISSING MAIL BAGS.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, January 11

The discovery in the hills near Morere by detectives yesterday of charred remains of a quantity of mail matter, including a mail bag, apparently solves the mystery of the disappearance of mail bags containing registered packages from the Napier-Gisborne mail van last Saturday night. Since the disappearance of the mail bags an intensive search of the Morere district has been carried out by Detective W. Mason (Napier), Sergeant D. Clarke (Wairoa), and Constable D. Hbuston (Nuhaka).

Yesterday the party discovered an open fire on the Gisborne side of the Morere hill around which were scattered the charred contents of one of the mail bags. Near the fire was a halfburned letter which is understood to be portion of one of the registered packages. It is understood also that metal rings and portion of the mail bag itself were discovered. It is believed that all the letters in the mailbag were opened, and, after the valuables had been removed, were burnt.
