The Rev. J. H. Datson, formerly curate at St. Matthew’s Church, is visiting Masterton. The Government has decided to send the Chief Postmaster in Wellington, Mr John Madden, as New Zealand delegate to the eleventh Universal Postal Congress which will open in Buenos Aires on April 1 next.
. The funeral took place at Masterton yesterday afternoon of Douglas Jago, leaving the residence of Mr E. G. Eton, Cornwall Street for the Masterton Cemetery. Services were conducted at the house and graveside by the Rev. E. J. Rich. The pall-bearers were Messrs H. Millington, R. S. King, D. J. Duncan, E. S. Eton, W. E. Eton and H. Lawson. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, among which were wreaths from the managers and staffs of the Palmerston North and Masterton branches of the National Bank of New Zealand. The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. A. J. H. McMaster, aged 47. Mr. McMaster was the eldest son of the late Mr Alexander Anthony McMaster, Toka-Rahi Estate, North Otago, and a grandson of the late Mr John Reid, Elderslie, Oamaru. After leaving Canterbury Agricultural College, Mr McMaster assisted his father in the management of the Toka-Rahi Estate. Later he purchased Balmoral Homestead, North Canterbury, where he remained till leaving for war service overseas. On his return after the war he farmed in South Canterbury and Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. He retired eight years ago and went to live in Christchurch.
Mr Arthur Welch Percy, wellknown as an authority on native flora, died on Sunday at his residence, Petone, aged 75. He belonged to a family of builders who did a considerable amount of building in the Hutt Valley many years ago. Mr Percy had lived in retirement for a considerable time. He made a study of horticulture, particularly native flora, and had specimens of practically every known native shrub and tree in his garden. Mr Percy’s family owned extensive property in Petone, including that which was taken over by the Government when the railway branch line to Waterloo was laid down. Mr. Percy’s brothers and sisters predeceased him. He was a bachelor.
