“OUT OF THE MOUNTAINS”
STORY OF t\ TRIP TO MILFORD SOUND. "Out of the Mountains,” by I. E. Dickens, M.A. (published by A. H. and A. W. Reed) is a little book that will be welcomed and prized by New Zealanders who delight in what is best in the unspoiled natural glories of their country. and will have its appeal, too. to visitors from other lands.
Miss Dickens gives a description at once picturesque and informative of the Milford Track, Milford Sound and the scenic highway to Milford—much of what is finest in the mountain, lake and fiord country of the South Island —as she made their acquaintance, in days of sunshine and rain, in February last year.
Admirably written, the book derives interest and vitality from its reflection not only of some of the most remarkable scenic beauties in the world, but of the evidently whole-souled enjoyment with which its author revelled in the grandeurs she describes. While it will carry its own recommendation to many who have no present hope of taking “the most wonderful walk in the world,” “Out of the Mountains’’ will be of special value to those who hope before long to see the mountains, lakes and fiords for themselves. Miss Dickens gives many proofs of keen and accurate observation. Her freely written narrative is informative throughout, and those who have read it will afterwards make the journey to Milford with added pleasure and profit. Illustrated with upwards of a score of photographs, the book is in every way an excellent production of its attractive kind.
