NUNNELEY CASKET
WOMEN’S TENNIS MATCH CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. HOLDERS LIKELY TO RETAIN trophy. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. Canterbury gained a lead of five rubbers to one on the first day of the women’s interprovincial tennis match for the Kathleen Nunneley Casket at Wilding Park, and is in a most promising position for retention of the trophy. Wellington's only success was scored by Miss J. Douthett against Miss I. Poole, who subsequently had to withdraw from the match because of a badly strained arm.
Though the weather was fine, a strong north-west gale made playing conditions very difficult. Some players were affected more than others, and it was unfortunate that conditions could not be regarded as providing a true test of lawn tennis. The courts were extremely fast, and in very good order. There was only a handful of spectators. Both teams had players new to interprovincial tennis, but on. the whole the Canterbury players showed more confidence in the trying conditions. Results: — Siiiqles. Miss T. Poole (Canterbury) beat Miss E. Plummer (Wellington), 6-0. 6-4. Miss J. Douthett (Wellington) beat Miss I. Poole (Canterbury), 6-1, 6-1. Miss D. Dickey (Canterbury), beat Miss J.
