Messrs J. A. Betts and E. W. Payton left Masterton today to spend a fishing holiday at Lake Taupo.

The death occurred at Konini pn Saturday of Mrs Catherine Burke, wife of Mr Richard Albert Burke, at the age of 63 years. Mr Sid Slatter, formerly of the Wairarapa College, and now a pupil at the Canterbury University, has passed in the following subjects in the second stage of the B.Sc.—Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. A long period of local body service was ended by the death in Waipukurau on Friday of Mr Matthew Tansey, a member of the Waipukurau County Council, and an old and wellknown resident of Central Hawke’s Bay. Mr Tansey was aged 76.

The death has occurred of Mr Andrew Kirk, widely known and highly respected in the legal profession in Christchurch. Born in Christchurch 69 years ago, Mr Kirk was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Canterbury University College. He graduated with the degree of LL.B, and for many years was a practising barrister and solicitory in the city. He was one of the early members of the Canterbury Law Society.

When the Union Steam Ship Company’s. chartered steamer Narbada, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, was three days out from Singapore, en route to New Zealand from Calcutta, on December 19, the death occurred of a passenger, Mrs Jane Todd, aged 62, wife of Mr Samuel Todd, Auckland. Mrs Todd, accompanied by her husband and two daughters, was making the round voyage on the vessel. She became ill in Calcutta and died early in the morning of December 19 of heart failure. She was buried at sea the same day. The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday of Master Douglas Walter Jago, of Masterton, son of the late Mr and Mrs Walter Jago, of Masterton, and brother of Mr Max Jago and Miss Mary Jago, formerly of Masterton, at the age of 15 years. The deceased, who was a pupil of the Wairarapa College, was very popular with those who knew him. Possessing a bright and intelligent nature, he took a keen interest in drama, and was associated with the dramatic entertainments at the College. Deep sympathy will be extended to the relatives in their sad bereavement.

On Saturday night, at his son's residence, College Street, Masterton, the death occurred of Mr. J. T. Hills, of Lansdowne. The late Mr. Hills was born in Essex, England, 77 years ago, and came to New Zealand 30 years ago to take up a farm at Akura. After 17 years he retired to Roberts Road, Lansdowne, where his beautiful garden was a source of admiration to all who saw it. He is survived by a widow, one son, Mr. H. H. Hills, of College Street, Masterton, one daughter, Mrs. R. Emerson, of Villa Street, two grandsons and a grand-daughter. The funeral is to take place this afternoon.
