The Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Education, is spending a holiday in Rotorua.
Mr and Mrs W. B. Tooby, of Otaki, are spending a holiday in Masterton as the guests of their daughter, Mrs G. W. Milne, Renall Street.
Mr W. H. Jackson and his daughter, Mrs Llewellyn Bagnall, Remuera, are staying foi> a week or two at Kawau, the island home of the late Sir George Grey. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Lee Martin, spent a week’s holiday at The Terraces, Taupo. With Mrs Martin he had a very successful day fly-fishing on the lake. They took nine fish at Whakaipo, the Minister landing one of 61b.
Mr Savage spent the Christmas and New Year holidays in Wellington, where he was in close touch with his office to deal with questions of urgency. He has spent some time at his desk on most days, but otherwise enjoyed a respite from official duties.
The death of Mr Richard James Shakes occurred in Wellington ’on Thursday. He had been identified with Wellington business circles for many years. Born in Wellington in 1879, Mr Shakes was the eldest son of the late Mr James William Shakes, who, for many years, was in business as a tobacconist. On his death his son, Mr Richard James Shakes, carried on the business till recently, when indifferent health caused him to retire. Mr Shakes was also a promeninent member of the Masonic fraternity, in which he held the offices of City Almoner of the Wellington district, and Grand Pursuivant. He was Worshipful Master of Leinster Lodge for two consecutive years. He also held high executive offices in Royal Arch degrees. His wife died eight years ago.
