CARTERTON
HEAVY GOODS TRAIN. ("Times-Age” Special.) A very heavily laden goods train left the local railway station last evening. It was drawn by one engine and consisted of over 20 trucks of lambs, one each of cattle and pigs, about 8 trucks of wool besides other waggons laden with goods. There were over 40 trucks. A train that left the station yards on Tuesday evening for Cross Creek was even bigger and carried about 200 tons more. The railways seem to be coming back into their own. Bowling. Word has been received by the Secretary of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre from Mr J. A. Nash, of the Manawatu Centre, that a number of rinks from his Centre would visit Wairarapa to play the annual fixture either on January 28 or February 4. If the latter date is decided upon the matches set down in the Booth Cup competition will be played on January 28, a week earlier. Trouble Caused by Truck. There was for a time last evening mild excitement at the Carterton railway station. The train was a long one and during shunting operations one of the foremost trucks near the engine became jambed. The mishap necessitated the removal of each waggon separately by the use of a motor lorry to give room to work on the truck which caused the trouble. It was the best part of an hour before the truck could be righted. Personals. Mr W. Pearson, erstwhile of Carterton, and now a resident of Auckland, is a visitor to Carterton, and is the guest of Mr Tom Dunn. Mr and Mrs Darcy Fry, of Nelson, have been spending the new year holidays with Mrs Fry’s father, Mr Carl Peterson, of Somerset Road, Carterton. They will leave for Nelson on Friday. Mrs Fry, who is well-known in Carterton, has been visiting old friends.
