YOUTH CITY
FOSTERING-EMPIRE SPIRIT. PROPOSALS IN LONDON. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, January 4. A plan for the construction of a "Youth City” in London, preferably on the old Crystal Palace site, as a central meeting place for the Empire’s youth, was outlined today by Lord Bessbrough at the headmasters’ conference at the Guildhall. The movement is primarily designed to evoke a spirit of Empire and co-operation among students and ex-students of secondary school age. . A committee has been formed comprising former Governors-General. including Lord Bledisloe for New Zealand. Lord Stonehaven for Australia, and Lord Bessbrough for Canada. Lord Lloyd represents Britain.

Lord Bessborough, broadcasting, said the total cost of the Youth City proposal was estimated at about a million sterling if the whole scheme were carried out. Half of this sum would be devoted to great central building and the remainder would be required for ten Dominion or colonial houses, at £50.000 each. The organisers hope to obtain a quarter of a million for the central building from public funds, and efforts will be made to raise another quarter of a million from individuals, national organisations. educational trusts, city companies and schools.
