Only , a few people met in the main street to see the Old Year out and the New Year in. There was no rowdiness and the New Year was welcomed with the tooting of motor horns and a; few “big bangers.” ' . ..Fire, in Washhouse. An. alarm was sounded on the firebell at 10.15 o’clock this morning, a fire having been discovered in the washhouse. at the premises of Mr F. Housiaux, in Holloway Street. It appears that Mrs Housiaux was busy doing the weekly washing, and left the building for a moment to go into the cottage adjoining. On returning she found the wash-house on fire, a strong westerly wind fanning the flames. The brigade was quickly on the scene, and, despite the dry nature of the timber in the building, soon had the conflagration out. The building was damaged considerably by the fire, and a large quantity of household linen destroyed.
