VISIT TO TUNIS
FRENCH PREMIER DELAYS DEPARTURE
DIFFERENCES OVER BUDGET. CONCESSIONS TO ITALY OPPOSED. dy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, January 1. The French Premier. M. Daladier. was forced to postpone his departure for Tunis because of delay in Parliament in passing the Budget. The Senate had already approved it and it had been referred to the Finance Committee of the Chamber when acute differences arose between Rightists and Leftists. The Radicals accused the Socialists and Communists of deliberately provoking difficulties in order to prevent M. Daladier's departure. Finally, however, the Chamber passed the Budget by 372 votes to 229, after which MDaladier left for Toulon, en route for Tunis.
The Paris correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” says that the Republican Federation, a Parliamentary group of 50 deputies whose support is essential to the Daladier Government, has passed a resolution de-; claring that it will withdraw its support if concessions are made to Italy beyond those contained in the 1935 agreement which Italy has just repudiated.
WILL NEVER BE CEDED CORSICA A PROVINCE OF FRANCE. M. DALADIER WELCOMED ENTHUSIASTICALLY. (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) AJACCIO, January 2. “Corsica is a province of France and everyone within and without France will do well to bear it in mind. It will never be ceded,” declared M. Daladier, addressing thousands of welcomers. A record crowd cheered, waved flags and threw up hats as M. Daladier disembarked from the Foch and took his place in a procession under a symbolic Arc de Triomphe. He also reviewed the garrison troops. M. Daladier added: “France is strong. The five warships lying in the roadstead prove it to you. They are watching over you. Fishermen can return to theor boats, shepherds to their flocks and farmers to their ploughs with a perfect sense of security.” Later M. Daladier re-embarked for Bastia.
