SAPPHO FRAGMENT

Further particulars are now available about the fragments of the poem found by Professor Vogliano and by him attributed to Sappho. The little papyrus is in the shape of a right-angle, has the colour of a tobacco leaf, and is sadly damaged by time. Some of the letters are missing, but the small gaps do not prevent the full reading of the text. This consists of eight lines in Greek letters, which undoubtedly must have been transcribed during the second century of the Christian era, or about eight centuries after they had been composed. At the back of the papyrus are the words in Greek, "The Divine poetess Sappho,” which probably were preceded by the words "poem by.” It is, however, on the contents of the fragment and not of this indication on the back that Professor Vogliano bases his conviction that this fragment is to be attributed to Sappho. He is now preparing an essay in which he explains the reasons for his attribution.
