PROTECTIVE STEPS
SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT BUYS MOUNTAINS. The South African Union Director of Forestry announced that the Government during the last two years had acquired large areas of the Western Province Mountains to enable it to undertake the protection of catchment areas. These areas were being rapidly extended. It will now be possible, with strict supervision, to conserve the country's water supply, to put an end to mountain fires which ravage great stretches of country every year, to prevent soil erosion,' and to protect the natural fauna and flora. The Director of Forestry stated that almost without exception the entire farming community was today behind the Government in its efforts.
