BIG FEATURES OF JANUARY ISSUE. James Cowan brightly tells the story of Little Barrier, a sanctuary for native birds. He illustrates colourfully the romance of the old Maori days on that lonely island. Ken Alexander, with comic sketches and sparkling prose, offers some humorous philosophy of life. O. N. Gillespie cleverly sets out facts to prove that New Zealand has a good right 'to be known as the nursery of the thoroughbred horse. He recalls the triumphs of those historic champions Carbine and Phar Lap. C. H. Gordon concludes his excellent review of the thrilling adventures of the Enderbys in the old whaling and sealing days. In “Dream Places,” Leo Fanning projects himself as a reincarnation of an ancient Maori chief into Kauriland, now known as Northland. F. A. Hornibrook has a pleasant article about Kent, the Garden of England. He also describes the county’s miniature railway, the world’s smallest railway, which has a gauge of only 15 inches. Other popular features include New Zealand verse, chats about books and authors and sport, and topical notes and comments for women.
