RAILWAYS PROGRESS

ELECTRIFICATION IN BRITAIN. (British Official Wireless.; RUGBY, December 29. During the year there has been record activity in the electrification of British railways. In the home counties the underground and tube railway extensions, linked with main line developments, represent an important feature of this work.

The Southern Railway recently opened a new section which, has completed the electrification of the Lon-don-Portsmouth and PortsmouthBrighton lines. The Southern Railway, which now has the largest electrified suburban system in the world, will tomorrow complete another important stage m its development with the formal opening of the new electrified sections of the line linking Reading, Ascot, Aidershot and Guildford.

These sections complete the electrification of the outer suburban area of Ihe Southern Railway, and the 43 route miles involved bring the total electrified track of the railway to 655 route miles.
