RUNAWAY JIGGER
STOPPED AT MASTERTON STATION. * WILD CAREER DOWN TRACK FROM MAURICEVILLE. Some excitement was caused at the Masterton railway station yesterday afternoon when it was learnt that a motor jigger had by some means run away from Mauriceville and was careering down the track towards Masterton. Fortunately, the jigger negotiated the thirteen-mile stretch without mishap and on reaching Masterton was successfully derailed without suffering much damage. The mishap occurred shortly after the earthquake. It- is not known how the jigger broke' away, but immediately it was known to have done so, Masterton was asked to ensure *that it should be stopped here. The points were half-set and stub blocks placed on the line but the former proved effective and derailed the jigger, which, it was stated, was travelling at about 30 to 35 miles an hour when it reached the station yards.
It was indeed fortunate that there were no trains on the track and that the jigger did not crash into any car on level crossings, of which there are two or three rather dangerous ones north of Opaki.
