Mr and Mrs H. C. Skeen, of Auckland, accompanied by their two daughters. are at present spending a holiday with Mrs R. J. King, of Lansdowne. Mr and Mrs Neville Chamberlain have left for a holiday in Yorkshire as the guests of Lord and Lady Swinton, a British official wireless message reports.

The death occurred recently, at the age of 69, of Mr H. Shadbolt, a wellknown resident of Pohangina. The eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs J. Shadbolt, he was born in Akaroa, and went to live in-Pohangina with his parents when aged 20. With the exception of short periods in Hunterville and Ashhurst, he had lived there ever since. Mr Shadbolt was predeceased by his wife in November. He is survived by two sons, Messrs Walter and Albert Shadbolt and one daughter, Mrs A. Smith, Cambridge.

Mr G. F. Knapp, of Perry Street, Masterton,, will celebrate his seventyfourth birthday tomorrow. Mr Knapp, who was born in Greytown in 1865, and who married Miss Goodin, of Featherston, came to Masterton eighteen years ago. Mr Knapp was engaged in farming for some years, and later became associated with St Matthew’s Church, Masterton, as verger and caretaker, having occupied those positions for the past fifteen years. Mr Knapp’s service and loyalty have set an example well worthy of being followed.

After nearly 24 years’ service as Archdeacon of Auckland, Ven G. Mac Murray will retire from that office today, and will assume the title of archdeacon emeritus. The archdeacon, who was 83 in August, and celebrated his ministerial diamond jubilee on December 22, has been a resident of Auckland for 46 years. He was vicar of St Mary’s Cathedral from 1892 to 1919, and was appointed canon in 1901, archdeacon in 1915, and Vicar-General of the Auckland diocese in 1930. The new archdeacon of Auckland is the Ven H. A. Hawkins, who for the past 26 years has been .Archdeacon of Waimate, supervising the district from Helensville to the North Cape. He is to be succeeded in that office by the Rev H. T. Steele, vicar of Whangarei. The death occurred in Wellington .this week of Mr William Wilcox Tanner, formerly M.P. for Heathcote and Avon, and probably the last of the representatives elected to the eleventh New Zealand Parliament in 1890, at the age of 87 years. In all he was in Parliament for 18 years, and he gave general support to the Liberal Governments of Ballance, Seddon and Ward, but always maintained a considerable measure of independence, as he was radically inclined. For a number of years he was chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, and also the Railways Committee. Since the death of his wife 11 years ago, Mr Tanner has led a retired life at his residence in Linwood, Christchurch, till recently, when he came to Wellington to reside with his son.
