ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS BROKEN NEARLY 37 MILLIONS RAISED LAST YEAR. OVER £23 PER CAPITA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Taxation by the Government in the year ended March 31 last reached the total of £36,767,525, the highest figure ever recorded in the history of New Zealand, according to information contained in the latest Monthly Abstract of Statistics. This figure represents an average of £23 Is 3d a head of population, including Maoris. Last year £31,164,302 was raised in general taxation, and in 1936, £25,476.372, representing £l9 14s lOd and £l6; 5s 6d a head respectively. Taxation raised for local body purposes amounted to £6,624,980 in the year which ended on March 31, 1937. Of the various individual taxes by far the greatest increase was drawn from income tax, which at £9,078,763. stands £2,460,047 above last year’s level. Notable increases were also recorded in employment promotion taxation, £5,105,019, as compared with £4,224,965; Customs revenue, £10.758,733, as compared with £9,499, 254, and sales tax £3,499,131 as compared with £3,044,612. Motor- vehicles taxation, beer duty, and racing taxation also show moderate increases. On the otherhand, returns from the land tax have dropped from £1,047,877 for last year, to £1,038,034, and in the same period death duties have declined from £1,725,135 to £1,679,599.
